Spine Rehabilitation is a specialty within orthopedics. It is unique in that it involves orthopedic and neurologic components and can cause pain outside of the spine in the head, upper and lower extremities.

At NNPT we provide a thorough hands-on examination including postural assessment, palpation, joint assessment including passive and active joint movement, neurologic assessment, identify strength deficits and asymmetries, and functional mobility. This is necessary to best identify the source(s) of your condition to devise specific treatment to optimize outcomes.

We specialize in orthopedics and manual therapy with advanced training certification including Paris, Maitland and Mulligan which all have different and very unique specific treatments for spine assessment and care. We have found that an integrative toolbox of manual therapy and orthopedic techniques provide the most successful outcomes in spine care.

Case Spotlight

Low Back Pain with Referred Testicular Pain

Mr. T was a 68 year-old male referred to NNPT for back pain. Upon consult, he stated he has had back pain for some time but more bothersome is the severe right testicular pain he has had for several months. He had been seen by several MD's and they had ruled out any urological disorders, hernia or specific testicular problems. Upon thorough physical therapy examination of his lumbar spine through palpation of his right quadratus lumborum muscle in his right low back he had pain and comparable sign into his right testicle. This area of his back was treated with manual therapy including soft tissue mobilization and joint mobilizations offering relief of his symptoms. After his course of care his back pain minimized, and his testicular pain was abolished.

Patient Snapshot:
Mr. T, 68, chronic low back pain with severe right testicular pain; medical work-up ruled out urologic and hernia causes.

Assessment:
Palpation of right quadratus lumborum reproduced the testicular pain (comparable sign), indicating a lumbar myofascial referral pattern.

Manual & Rehab Approach:
Focused soft-tissue mobilization and lumbar joint techniques, followed by mobility and stabilization work.

Outcome:
Testicular pain abolished, and low back symptoms reduced over the course of care.
